60s pump shoes and mini skirt

60s brings a blast from the past to the fashion around the world. People begin to feel free, to express their feelings by the way they dress, through new textures and colors of fabrics.

The garment star of the 60s was the miniskirt, although this decade brings with it a lot of new trends in fashion and not only, this skirt changed completely the perceptions of women about femininity and beauty. Up until now, all women worn knee lenght skirts or dresses and longer ones, but now the legs and sex appeal are emphazised. Women begin to trust themself, feel more beautiful and stronger and begin to wear skirts and dresses increasingly shorter. Having a disputed origin between British designer Mary Quant, John Bates, Barbara Hulanicki of Biba and the Parisian couturier Andre Courreges the impact of the miniskirt was undeniable, signifying the beginning of the sexual revolution.

Simplified mini dresses were made from a perfect fabric for textile design, from Op and Pop Art (optical illusion painting that fools the eye), so Betsey Johnson created in 1966 three dresses that have made headlines till now and are taken over by big fashion houses.

Silhouette radical change required a major change in the style of footwear as a miniskirt requires a beautiful shoe. Although the inventor of  Pilgrim pump shoes, Roger Vivier, launched them with Christian Dior, while working for him. At the begining, women were slightly skeptical to quit stilettos which elongate the legs against these rounded short hells shoes but otherwise very comfortable. But in the mid 60s, these lightweight and comfortable shoes got the attention of women after Jackie Kennedy was photographed with them.

The shoe was further popularized and imitated endlessly after the French actress Catherine Deneuve wore it in the film “Belle de Jour” (1967).

The 60s left us a legacy of beautiful cuts and colors that are stil fashionable nowadays. If you find a mini skirt or a dress from that period in your grandmother’s wardrobe, wear it with pride and accessorize it with style, because it is a valuable piece of garment that will make you stand out.

Dearfully,
